Kid Blue (1973)

By Willard Smith

KID BLUE (Fox) Dennis Hopper, Warren Oates, Peter Boyle, Ben Johnson, Lee Purcell, Janice Rule. In 1900 a young outlaw moves to a dusty Texas town seeking to turn his life around by getting an honest job.

An engrossing tale with an interesting set of characters well-played by a top-notch cast, especially Johnson as Sheriff “Mean John” Simpson, and Rule as a shady lady from the kid’s past. However, the story struck me as strangely anachronistic in ways, seeming to belong to a somewhat earlier time (except for the primitive airplane), and the community is excessively hostile to the young fellow (Hopper) while he stubbornly resists making normal adjustments in pursuit of his goal. At the end the whole thing turns farcical.

But is it worth watching despite those flaws? I thought so. Maybe it was just that I was fascinated wondering where in heck it was going.

Scale of 10:  I give it 6.
